Hunter "Patch" Adams is an American physician, social activist, clown, and author.
Born on May 28, 1945. He is best known for his unconventional approach to medicine, emphasising the importance of humour, joy, and human connection in healing.
After experiencing suicidal thoughts in his youth, Adams committed to making a "love revolution" and decided to dedicate his life to serving humanity through medicine and happiness. He founded the Gesundheit! Institute in 1971, a non-profit organisation that aims to provide free, holistic healthcare. Adams and his colleagues operated a pilot project out of a communal home for 12 years, seeing 15,000 patients.
He believes that the current healthcare system is expensive and elitist and advocates for a model where doctors and patients relate based on mutual trust, and patients receive ample time and care. Patch Adams is also widely recognised for organising annual "clown trips" around the world, where he and volunteers dress as clowns to bring humour and compassion to orphans, patients, and people in need, often in war zones, refugee camps, and disaster areas. His life and philosophy were notably portrayed in the 1998 film "Patch Adams," starring Robin Williams, although Adams himself has expressed criticism that the film did not fully represent his broader activism and beliefs.
Although we are not a medical provider, we do adopt many of his methods.
At the heart of our care philosophy lies the vibrant spirit of Patch, guiding us to embrace a truly humanistic approach to well-being. We believe in moving beyond merely 'looking after' people.
Instead, fostering deep, empathetic connections with every individual. Through the intentional infusion of humour, joy, and compassion, we strive to create an environment where laughter is recognised as powerful medicine, and where the emotional and psychological needs of those in our care are valued as highly as their physical health. Our commitment is to holistic care, building genuine relationships that empower individuals to experience healing not just in body, but in mind and spirit too.
